Not all used dumper trucks are created equal and so it is important to buy one that is both suitable for the work you have planned for it, and one in a reasonable state of repair. Should you purchase a used dumper that can’t operate in the environments you want it to, then it is not only a waste of money but a waste of productivity.
With this in mind, what should you look for in your Volvo dumpers or similar vehicle?
The dump truck market is huge, and so the price of new vehicles will remain high so a used dumper could be just what your business needs.
Fuel Efficiency
To get the most out of your model you need to think about fuel efficiency. Around 50% of operating costs will be fuel related, and that together with the initial purchase price can make running your dumper truck a costly affair.
As such, do a little research and identify the most fuel efficient dumpers on the market. Once you come across one you can then look at other areas to ensure it is right for you.
One aspect to think about is whether the dump box is made from aluminum or steel. Aluminum is the more economical fuel-efficient choice but may be unsuitable for heavy materials, so steel is the one to opt for.
Inspect the Truck
It is good practice to inspect the outside of the truck for cracks, rusts, dents, and signs that the truck has received a major repair. Inspect the dump box thoroughly together with the box liner to see if there are signs of significant wear and or damage.
Pay attention to the tires as uneven wear could mean some kind of realignment will be needed.
As part of your inspections take a close look at truck frame rails. Should they sag or show signs of bending, it is a good idea to look elsewhere. Damage of this kind generally is down to poor operator use.
Check the Cab and Start Her Up
Climb into the cab and take a good look. Is it in good condition or is it showing signs of neglect? Check that when you switch on the truck all the gauges and lights are in working order. Start the engine and check all aspects of the lifting control mechanism work correctly.
Take her for a drive and check to see if there is any play in the steering.
If your vehicle is going to have multiple drivers it is good practice to go for an automatic transmission.
Hydraulics
As part of the lifting mechanism check, ensure you check the mechanism for signs of leaks and cracks. Dump trucks come with either a single ram, double ram, or scissor dump box lifting mechanism.
Every rod and cylinder should be checked for cracks, dents, and leaks. As well as the cylinders and rods check the reservoir tank for any signs of leakage.
If you’re happy, lower the mechanism. You are looking for a smooth seamless process.
The Engine
You obviously need a dump truck with a good working engine. If you’re unsure what you’re looking for, it is a good idea to bring someone who does.
If you can find the right dumper, you’ll save money and have a valuable piece of kit that will give good service for many years.
