Did social network X illegally use user data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) program? Yes, according to the Austrian association Noyb, which has filed a complaint in 9 European countries, including France. This news comes as the social network is already in trouble this year.
X targeted by complaint regarding user data and artificial intelligence
X is the subject of 9 complaints filed in 9 European countries : Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Poland. The filings were coordinated by the Austrian NGO Noyb. It accuses the social network of using its users' data to train its AI model: Grok.
However, without the consent of the persons concerned, such a practice is illegal. Noyb had already filed a complaint against Meta (Facebook, Instagram) last June for the same reasons.. So now it is X that is targeted. Bought about 2 years ago by Elon Musk, the social network uses artificial intelligence technology also developed at the initiative of the billionaire.

But In the European Union, it is strictly forbidden to use user data (messages, tweets, etc.) for any other technologywithout requesting prior agreement:

A deliberate dodge on the part of the X teams?
Furthermore, unlike Meta, which had warned its users, X appears to have been using their data discreetly, without even announcing this change. :
“Twitter has started feeding its Grok AI technology with irreversible data from European users starting in May 2024.

Yet, as Noyb's director points out, It would have been enough to ask users a simple question :
“Companies that interact directly with users simply need to ask them a yes/no question before using their data. They already do this for many other things, so this would be possible when it comes to AI as well.»
Noyb accuses X of knowingly circumventing the rules to collect as much data as possible.. Already, Meta had received 11 complaints from the NGO, which forced the tech giant to stop using European user data to train its AI model.
X and Elon Musk in turmoil in recent months
This is not the only difficulty X has encountered in recent months. The social network has been accused of spreading false information and incitement to hatred, and its advertisers have fled in waves. In response, Elon Musk announced that he was filing a lawsuit against major advertising groups, which he said had organized a “boycott.” Several major legal cases await the social network.in difficulty since the billionaire took over.
