We had the opportunity to speak with Abdel Bakhta, Ecosystem Manager at Starkware, on a technical subject but with potentially revolutionary implications for Bitcoin: the reactivation of the OP_CAT opcode in the protocol's scripting language. This code, deactivated for a long time, is today sparking a lively debate on its advantages, its risks, and the prospects it could open up for the development of new solutions on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Bitcoin and L2: reactivation of OP_CAT, is it a good or bad idea? With Abdel Bakhta
OP_CAT, or “Concatenate”, is an instruction in the Bitcoin scripting language that allows you to concatenate 2 character strings. While this may seem trivial, this feature could actually provide greater flexibility in creating complex transactions and enable the development of new applications on the blockchain.
Abdel Bakhta, Head of Ecosystem at Starkware, warns of the potential vulnerabilities this reactivation could introduce, but he also highlighted the benefits it would bring.
