Mobile communications are more expensive in Germany than in many other European countries. According to a Verivox analysis, prices in Germany are 22 percent above the EU average.
A study by the British company cable.co.uk shows that Mobile data volume in Germany on average two euros per gigabyte costs. In Italy it is only 0.08 euros. According to Verivox, there are two main reasons for the high prices: A lack of competition and expensive license costs from the past. “Markets with four or more network operators regularly have a more dynamic competition, to advantage for consumers,” says Jörg Schamberg, telecommunications expert at Verivox.
Mobile phone tariffs in Germany: Consumers should book as required
The German market is not particularly dynamic due to the merger of E-Plus and O2. “Even today, the three top dogs Telekom, Vodafone and O2 dictate the prizes,” said Schamberg. Smaller providers must buy bandwidth and data on given conditions. So far, the Federal Network Agency has not taken any decisive measures to strengthen the competition. The agency has allowed network operators to continue using their licenses by 2030 without demanding a mandatory submission of network capacities to smaller competitors.
Verivox recommends consumers, Book the tariffs as required and use an online collective bargaining consultant. “Often the monthly fee can be halved – with small compromises in speed,” says Schamberg.
