The Brexit advocates fear that the European Political Community could become a kind of substitute EU. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Truss will take part in the first meeting in Prague, the FAZ has learned.
DAccording to FAZ information, British Prime Minister Liz Truss will take part in the first meeting of the “European Political Community” (EPG) in Prague. “We’re going,” said the government in London on Thursday evening. The decision, which was made just a week before the summit next Tuesday, was preceded by intensive internal discussions.
In Downing Street, for example, it was feared that the arch-Brexiteers in the Conservative Party could protest against participation in a new European format. An important prerequisite for Truss is therefore “that the EPG does not become an EU-dominated event”. There must be a “balance” between the block of EU countries and the non-members. The project should also be “not secretarized”. New institutions are undesirable.
The EPG, which goes back to an idea by French President Emmanuel Macron, is intended to connect EU countries with other European countries. Among others, the Ukraine, Georgia and the Balkan states were invited. Critics fear that the EPG could become a kind of “parking lot” in which accession candidates are to be “parked” permanently without actually accepting them.
