In the catacombs of the Olympic Stadium, far away from all cameras but not far enough from the reporters’ ears, Fredi Bobic and Oliver Baumann crossed paths on Sunday. A superficial, short conversation customary in the industry developed between the sports director of Hertha BSC and the goalkeeper of TSG Hoffenheim. Baumann was annoyed about “such a stupid throw-in” that had led to the equalizer for the Berliners. And Bobic? He seemed relaxed, hands in pockets, smiling. It is very pleasant here in Berlin, he told Baumann. Only this thing with Windhorst was, well, modest. Bobic used a different expletive with the same initial syllable. Baumann nodded understandingly.
What the Hoffenheim goalkeeper actually thought will remain his secret, “typically Hertha” would be a logical answer. From afar, it looks like the club’s well-known affliction. If the Berliners don’t have any problems, they make them for themselves.
