DAccording to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the increase in illegal immigration to Germany is “noticeable, but currently not comparable to the increase in 2015/16 in Germany”. This was announced by a spokeswoman for the FAZ. According to statistics from the Federal Police, the number of unauthorized entries has risen steadily since the beginning of the year.
While the number of unauthorized entries in the first half of the year was between almost 4,000 and a good 5,000 people per month, it has risen disproportionately every month since June. In June, the federal police found 6,667 illegal entries, in July 6,941, in August 8,846 and in September 12,701. A further increase is feared.
Although the increase is also due to seasonal conditions, the Ministry of the Interior sees “a higher dynamic” compared to previous years. The increase in illegal migration has to do with the economic and domestic political situation in countries such as Turkey, Libya, Tunisia and Lebanon. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the illegal immigrants come primarily from the Balkan region and, in the course of secondary migration, from the EU states of Greece and Italy.
According to the ministry, around 10,300 people entered the EU via Greece this year, compared to 9,200 in the previous year and around 15,700 in 2020. So far this year, 76,000 migrants have entered the EU via Italy; In 2021 it was around 67,500 and in 2020 around 34,000. The total number of asylum applications from January to September is around 154,600, of which around 135,000 were first-time asylum applications.
The Ministry of the Interior rejects the accusation that the numbers of the federal police are no longer sent to their offices. That is still the case. However, they would no longer be published on the federal police intranet, as it had been determined that they were intended “only for official use”. On the intranet, however, they are actually publicly accessible. In the “Bild” newspaper, Manuel Ostermann from the board of directors of the German Police Union (DPolG) complained that the current figures had not been updated on the intranet since September.
