An early Tuesday morning, previously unknown perpetrators blew up an ATM in Hofheim-Diedenbergen. According to the police, witnesses saw a car drive away from the scene around 4 a.m. after a loud bang. It is still unclear whether the perpetrators stole money.
About 20 minutes later, the same car caused a serious accident on the A643 near the Schiersteiner Bridge near Mainz-Mombach. For reasons that are still unknown, the car drove into the central barrier and the occupants fled on foot. They are being searched for, including with the support of several service dog handlers and a helicopter.
The bridge is currently closed in both directions because it cannot be ruled out that there are still dangerous substances in the car that were used to blow up the ATM. In this regard, the car is being examined by special forces from the State Criminal Police Office. A spokesman for the Mainz police said it would take some time before the investigation and the clean-up work were completed and the motorway could be reopened, so road users should avoid the A643 extensively.
