Amritpal Singh Sandhu is a radical Indian Khalistan separatist, a self-styled Sikh preacher and leader of the organisation Waris Punjab De (“Heirs of Punjab”) from Punjab, India.
After living in Dubai for a decade, he returned to Punjab in September 2022 to take charge of the organisation following the death of its previous leader Deep Sidhu.
He campaigned for six months encouraging youth to stay off drugs, to take up a pure of Sikhism, and the need for Khalistan.
He also goes by the names Amritpal Singh Bakalawale, Amritpal Singh Khalsa, and Bhai Amritpal Singh.
He had permanent resident status in Canada.
Amritpal Singh claims that despite of no formal religious schooling, he could cite the tales of historical struggles and injustices against Sikhs.
In an interview, Amritpal Singh mentioned Bhindranwale, a militant and leader of the Sikh organization ‘Damdami Taksal’ and the protagonist of the Khalistan movement, as his “inspiration”. He said that he wanted to be like him. Amritpal Singh said,
Bhindranwale is my inspiration. I will walk the path shown by him. I want to be like him because that’s what every Sikh wants, but I am not copying him. I am not even equal to dust of his feet.”
Reportedly, Amritpal’s uncle Harjit Singh told the media that when Amritpal, along with one of his classmates, decided to cut their hair, the family was disappointed; however, on his return to Punjab from Dubai and taking Amrit (holy water), his uncle expressed his happiness.
While talking about changes in Amritpal, in an interview, Harjit Singh said,
Our family is very religious. When Amritpal drifted away from it, we didn’t like it. He told us that he and another boy, his classmate, had planned to cut their hair. While Amritpal cut his hair, that boy ran away.
We are very happy that he has taken Amrit (holy water) now.”
According to Amritpal, he used to be aggressive but returning to Punjab and adapting to the culture of Sikhism turned him into a calm person. Amritpal Singh talked about this in an interview and said,
I used to be aggressive. Now I don’t hold grudges. If someone criticises me, that doesn’t depress me anymore. I have a very large vision.”
Amritpal Singh is the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’, an outfit founded by actor-activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident in February last year. Amritpal Singh became the chief of the group after Sidhu’s death.
Deep Sidhu came into the spotlight last year when he was arrested for violence during farmer protests on Republic Day.
Amritpal Singh, a self-styled preacher who claims to represent the Sikh community, was born in Jallupur Khera of Punjab. He recently married UK-based NRI Kirandeep Kaur.
He claims to be a spiritual leader and his fiery oratory skills and promise to free the youth from the clutches of drug menace has garnered him a large following in Punjab and other parts of India.
Amritpal calls slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale his “inspiration”. He even dresses like the slain militant and copies his mannerisms, a report in The Indian Express said.
The controversial leader worked for 10 years in Dubai in his family-owned transport business. He shot into the limelight when he came out in support of the farmers’ agitation against the now-repealed farm reform laws.
Last year in December, supporters of Amritpal Singh vandalised the Model Town Gurdwara in Jalandhar by burning chairs and sofas, saying that keeping them in gurudwaras was against the tenets of Sikhism.
Another gurdwara at Biharipura village in Kapurthala district was also vandalised.
Amritpal Singh has several cases of kidnapping, theft lodged against him. He was recently booked by Punjab Police for abducting and assaulting a Sikh youth. His aide has been arrested in the case.
The Sikh youth who was beaten up, Varinder Singh, is a resident of Ropar district of Punjab. He had done a Facebook Live against Amritpal Singh and accused him of misleading Sikhs. Angered by this, Amritpal and his associates thrashed him.
Following this, police registered an FIR on Varinder Singh’s complaint.
He is already on the Centre’s radar after the Home Ministry recently wrote to the Punjab government expressing concern over the alleged suspicious activities of Amritpal.
Singh had issued a threat recently to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he would meet the same fate as that of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Amritpal Singh grew up as a resident of Jallupur Khera in the Amritsar district. He was the youngest of the three children of Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur. His family is said to be very religious (Sikhism).
His uncle Harjit Singh Sandhu was the sarpanch (head of village) for 10 years before moving to the United Kingdom.
After passing 10th class, Amritpal enrolled in a diploma course in mechanical engineering at Lord Krishna Polytechnic College in Kapurthala in 2009. He dropped out after three years, never having completed the course.
He has also said that he hasn’t ever read a book.
In 2012, he moved to Dubai in UAE to join his family’s transport business. His LinkedIn profile claimed that he has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Punjab.
His profile further claimed that he was the “Operations Manager” at a company called Sandhu Cargo Transport and that he had experience in transportation, trucking and railroad industry.
According to The Indian Express, he worked as a dispatcher for about ten years. Some sources state that he was a truck driver. However, much details of his time in Dubai for the rest of the decade remain unknown.
Amritpal often spoke about issues concerning Punjab on social media. In 2019, he started supporting the farmers’ protest and also became a vocal supporter of Deep Sidhu. His social media reach multiplied after he got associated with Sidhu.
He travelled to India to support the protest. At that time he was a Mona Sikh (Sikh without a beard and turban). After the farm laws were withdrawn, he returned to Dubai.
