Rhinestones and ruffles for men, double-breasted suits and trousers for women: evening wear is now moving.

Glitter and tulle are passé for many young women: they no longer want to look like sweets. Generation Z is challenging gender conventions – and with them the evening dress code.
Nfter hours of searching in umpteen fashion stores, Hanna, who is doing her Abitur this year in Braunschweig, had had enough. The saleswomen had handed her one dress after the other into the dressing room. Hanna’s mother initially commented encouragingly on the fittings, but at some point she too got annoyed. There must be something that corresponds to the daughter’s ideas.
Hanna prefers to wear wide pants and cropped tops in everyday life – just like most girls her age. “I just tried on the clothes out of some outdated stereotype,” she says. “It was actually clear to me from the start that I wanted to wear a pantsuit to the graduation ceremony.”
