After severe pain in my back and abdomen last Monday, an emergency operation was scheduled in a London hospital:
I was lucky to have the surgery because it was discovered that my gallbladder was completely destroyed. It was infected, inflamed and bleeding profusely, which could even cause pancreatitis if the stone had blocked the passage of the duct.
Where the founder of the famous decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol admits his mistake is that he failed to listen to himself during the early days of Aave in 2017, then named ETHLend at the time. Indeed, when the company moved its offices from Finland to Switzerland, a first pain began to appear in the backonly to disappear quickly the next day.
💡 What is the Aave protocol?
Since 2019 and after moving to London, Stani Kulechov explains that the pains have become more and more regular, to the point that over-the-counter painkillers no longer had any effect. Despite the advice of those around him and his GP, he admits to not having followed through with some recommended tests.

Gallstone causing pain
Later, MRI scan will help Stani Kulechov find out the cause of his painA calculation “big enough” in the gallbladder, but given his schedule, he chose to delay the operation:
“Knowing this, I was able to determine more easily what my problem was and the cure was either to change my diet completely or to have surgery. I neglected the idea of surgery because it would take time and I felt too busy. I tried again to manage the situation myself. I stopped drinking alcohol completely, I drank my last beer last year and I even gave up coffee and switched to tea.”

While Aave's founder acknowledges that his usual workdays “are at least 12 hours and often more for years“, he nevertheless draws lessons from this event by hoping to raise awareness among everyone about the downsides of overwork through his testimony.
