The six-time world footballer single-handedly shot the Argentina national team to victory against Estonia on Sunday. In the 5-0 win in Pamplona, Spain, Messi scored all five goals (9th minute/penalty, 45th, 47th, 71st and 76th).
It was the first time the Paris St.-Germain striker had scored five times in an international match. Previously, Messi had scored a maximum of three times.
Overall, it’s his second five-pack in his long career. In 2012 he netted five times for FC Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
For “La Pulga” (Eng.: the flea; editor’s note), who had led the South American champions to a 3-0 win against European champions Italy on Wednesday with two assists in the “Finalissima”, it was 82 goals in the 162nd international match to 86. He surpasses the legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas in the “eternal” top scorer list in international matches and moves up to fourth place.
