On November 1, 1849, 175 years ago, a letter was franked with a “Black One” in the Kingdom of Bavaria. The first stamp issued on German soil is an extremely rare collector's item. This lost and rediscovered first day cover will go under the hammer in Wiesbaden on Friday. The Heinrich Köhler auction house is auctioning off the valuable piece at an opening price of 250,000 euros. According to experts, the first German stamp has the potential to fetch a much higher price.
