Before the meeting, Redmann had already repeatedly stressed that he saw no mandate for the CDU to participate in the formation of a government. Due to the majority situation in the new state parliament, it would not be enough for a coalition of the SPD and CDU alone. The SPD, in turn, would have a majority with the BSW. Redmann strictly ruled out his party's participation in an alliance between the SPD and the BSW, for which it would not be mathematically needed.
After the election, it is appropriate to “treat each other decently,” Redmann explained on Thursday. For this reason, the CDU accepted the SPD's invitation to the meeting. However, the general conditions from his parties' point of view remain unchanged. The SPD won the election and can form a majority with the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance. The CDU will therefore not hold any further exploratory talks with the Social Democrats.
