Canopius Group has announced the appointment of Coleman V. Johnson as chief underwriting officer for the US and Bermuda. Johnson is the latest addition to Canopius USA’s leadership team as the company continues its expansion in the US.
In his new role, Johnson will report to Lisa Davis, chief executive for Canopius US and Bermuda, and Mike Duffy, Canopius Group chief underwriting officer.
Johnson has more than 20 years of underwriting and insurance leadership experience. He joins Canopius Group from Liberty Mutual, where he served as senior vice president and chief underwriting officer, middle market. Before that, he held senior leadership positions at The Hanover Insurance Group and The Hartford.

Prior to Johnson’s arrival at the company, Davis served as acting US and Bermuda CUO in addition to her role as chief executive. Under Davis’s leadership, Canopius USA has increased its staff by more than 30% since 2020. In the last 18 months, the company has appointed Greg Alcazar as chief financial officer, Serena Lee as general counsel, and Adam Finkle as chief operations officer.
