This means that the mobile hotspot in connection with the Flex tariff without a term is suitable, for example, as a fast Internet connection during a holiday trip. The download speed is 500 megabits per second (Mbps) in all Gigacube tariffs, the upload speed is 50 Mbps. COMPUTER BILD tried the Gigacube 4G – was it convincing?

Gigacube: Fast everywhere?
The maximum speeds estimated by the provider are the values under optimal conditions, which can only be achieved at isolated locations in Germany. The actual bandwidth also depends on the end device, the location and the other mobile phone users in the respective radio cell. A local speed test is easily possible with the COMPUTER BILD network test app and with a Callya prepaid card.
Gigacube: Post data volume
If the data volume is used up before the end of the billing month, you can book later; you only have to call up the web portal center.vodafone.de in the browser when there is a connection to the Gigacube. There are various packages to choose from: the largest includes 25 gigabytes (GB) and costs a one-time fee of EUR 24.99 (all prices as of June 3, 2022), there are also 10 GB (EUR 14.99), 5 GB (9, 99 euros) and 1 GB (2.99 euros). The data volume is not transferred to the next billing month. In the case of the flexible variant without a term (Gigacube Flex), the monthly package price is 34.99 euros, but here a one-time fee of 129.90 euros is due for the router. The advantage: the monthly base price only applies if you use the Gigacube. In the following, COMPUTER BILD tried the standard router with a Flex tariff.

Tried out: mobile high-speed WLAN
Setting it up is very simple: If Vodafone has not already done this, you insert the SIM card. Internet access is automatic via UMTS or LTE (4G). The WiFi password is on the bottom of the case, you can check the reception via the LED – and also via the router menu, which can be called up in the browser via the address http://giga.cube. The data volume used can be read on the web portal center.vodafone.de. Although the test took place at the edge of Vodafone’s LTE reception range, the reception was good. The LTE availability can be checked on a corresponding Vodafone website or with the network test app from COMPUTER BILD. The WLAN is available on the 2.4 and 5 gigahertz frequency bands, the range is sufficient for a holiday apartment.
The LEDs on the front provide information about WLAN and LAN connections and reception.
Limited mobile speed
The tariffs for the Gigacube are unique, especially since they apply everywhere in Germany – but not abroad. An EU option for other Vodafone networks, for example, would be great. Competitor Congstar offers a similar hotspot, but it only works at a fixed address. The Vodafone Gigacube can be used anywhere there is a socket, for example in many Deutsche Bahn trains. The Gigacube has no battery. Cellular speed is limited to 500 Mbps. Movies run at a maximum of 480p resolution. In the practical test, however, this limit was not yet active. Movies could be streamed smoothly in Full HD from Amazon Prime Video, but they also consumed 5 to 6 GB accordingly. In practice, the data consumption was much higher than expected, because as soon as WiFi is available, all background services run on the end devices (e.g. cloud synchronization of photos on the smartphone).
Use SIM card in other devices
In combination with the router, which by the way comes from Huawei, the Gigacube package is very easy to use. But it is the flexible LTE data tariff that can be used throughout Germany with an included volume of 50 GB that makes the offer stand out from the mass of LTE offers. It is all the more annoying that there is no battery available for the Gigacube for truly mobile use. But this shortcoming can be circumvented by removing the SIM card from the Gigacube and inserting it into another device.
In the practical test, this worked in mobile LTE routers and even in various smartphones and tablets. There are only two hurdles to overcome: Firstly, you have to change the APN (Access Point Name) in the depths of the SIM settings at home.vodafone.de. On the other hand, most modern smartphones require a smaller nano-SIM. The SIM in the Gigacube is in micro-SIM format, but the nano-SIM can be carefully removed from the frame and reinserted there later. However, since the SIM is not intended for use in smartphones, Vodafone could block this use in the future.
Conclusion: Vodafone Gigacube
Mainly thanks to the lavish LTE tariff with at least 50 GB, the Vodafone Gigacube is an almost unbeatable offer for frequent surfers who don’t necessarily want to make calls with the SIM. When using it, it should be borne in mind that HD video transmissions cost a lot of data volume and that Vodafone reserves the right to reduce the video resolution to 480p resolution, which is too pixelated for TV enjoyment.
Vodafone Gigacube 5G: cost and term
The Vodafone Gigacube is also available as a 5G model. In theory, it also achieves download speeds of up to 500 Mbps. For the Gigacube 5G, the provider only offers a contract with a minimum term of 24 months and no Flex tariff. Customers pay EUR 44.99/month for 125 GB data volume, EUR 54.99/month for 250 GB, and EUR 84.99/month for 500 GB. In addition, there is the connection price of EUR 49.99 and a one-time hardware price of EUR 1. The Gigacube 5G has the current WLAN standard Wifi 6 (WLAN-ax) on the box and has two LAN ports with gigabit speeds (1,000 Mbps).
