“Celebrate Christmas and decorate your churches!” That was the message from the new rulers to the Christian communities in Syria, reports a clergyman from Damascus who did not want to be named in a video conversation these days. The Islamist alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is apparently trying to allay fears that it is striving for strict Islamic rule in its dealings with the Christian minority.
