After the recent controversies surrounding the collection of certain sensitive data from MetaMask users, ConsenSys reacts and announces that it is updating the initial settings of the digital wallet in order to offer an alternative to Infura’s default RPC.
MetaMask and the data collected
Last week, ConsenSys updated its privacy policy for its Infura and MetaMask products. More specifically, we learned how the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) proposed by default, Infura, could collect certain sensitive Metamask user data when it was used.
As the controversy swelled following this announcement, ConsenSys quickly communicated to try to calm the situation. MetaMask’s parent company explained in particular that RPCs like Infura – allowing the user to be connected to the blockchain – should collect the IP address and the wallet address in order to provide the service.
Despite this, the company recalled that the personal data of users and their addresses were not stored together and therefore could not be associated in any way. In addition, this information is not resold and is even automatically deleted after 7 days.

ConsenSys updates its settings
A little over a week after the start of this case, ConsenSys reacts and announces changes to address user complaints. In a new press release published this Tuesday, December 6 at 2 p.m., we learn that ConsenSys is updating its default settings:
“We are making a few updates to MetaMask to reinforce our commitment to user choice. We are starting to roll out a new advanced settings page that users will see when they first log in to MetaMask. »
Concretely, ConsenSys will give all new users the ability to choose another RPC provider than Infura when they first log in to MetaMask. In other words, “a user with strong privacy requirements should be able to connect to MetaMask without going through a server that he has not chosen. “.
Among other novelties, the company also announced that it has facilitated the procedures addition of other RPC solutions than Infura and is currently working to fix bugs that could automatically modify the choice of provider without the user’s consent.
Finally, the fears of users have been heard and taken into account by ConsenSys.
