Vaccination certificates stored digitally on the cell phone expire automatically one year after the last vaccination. More and more people are currently receiving a warning on their smartphone. What vacationers need to consider and how you should react.
Users whose last vaccination was almost a year ago are currently getting a warning in the CovPass or Corona-Warn app that their Corona vaccination certificate is no longer valid
Do you have to be vaccinated against Corona again?
no The app only shows that the technical validity of the vaccination certificate expires after one year.
The current recommendation of the STIKO is that only groups of people who are particularly at risk of health or who are exposed should receive a 2nd booster vaccination with an mRNA vaccine after the basic immunization and 1st booster vaccination have been completed. Accordingly, the following groups of people should receive a 2nd booster vaccination:
- people over 70 years of age
- Residents and people being cared for in care facilities as well as people at risk of a severe course of illness in integration assistance facilities
- People with immunodeficiency from the age of 5 years
- Work in medical and nursing facilities (especially in direct contact with patients and residents).
Corona warning app allows extension of vaccination certificates
In the new version 2.23, the Corona-Warn-App automatically informs users before their recovery and vaccination certificates expire. You then have up to 90 days after the technical expiry date to renew the certificate by tapping the “Renew Certificate” notice in the Certificates section of the app.
After they have given their consent, the certificate will be automatically replaced. The technically expired certificate is moved to the recycle bin.
CovPass app: extend the expiry date – this is how it works
Similar to the Corona-Warn-App, the new version 1.26 of the CovPass app has an update function for certificates that are about to expire or have already expired.
As soon as one of your stored certificates is eligible, you will receive a notification and can renew the certificate in the detail view.
What do I have to consider when traveling abroad?
EU vaccination certificates without a booster are generally valid for 270 days for cross-border travel. With a booster vaccination you can renew the validity, which is then valid indefinitely.
If you travel abroad, you should definitely find out in advance about the rules that apply in the respective country. It is also recommended to take a look at the Corona-Warn-App. This makes it possible to check before a trip whether the certificates on test or vaccination status stored in the app are valid in a selected country at the time of the trip. The Corona-Warn-App takes into account the applicable entry rules of the selected travel country.
