The mining industry is undergoing changes thanks to the infusion of advanced technologies such as satellite-enabled Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and green technologies. Not just about pickaxes and dynamite anymore, today’s mines are often more similar to smart cities, with intricate networks of interconnected devices, all working in harmony to maximize efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The technological and sustainability advancements in the mining industry have not gone unnoticed by investors. Solaris Resources, a copper exploration company with its flagship Warintza Project in Ecuador, for example, recently received strategic interest from Chinese investors, signaling the value of mining projects that are both technologically advanced and environmentally responsible. As global demand for minerals, especially those critical for green technologies like electric vehicles and renewable energy systems continues to grow, the spotlight is firmly on mining operations that can deliver these resources efficiently and sustainably. Mining companies are seeing increased valuation and are more likely to secure investment if they can demonstrate a commitment to adopting advanced technologies and achieving green goals.

Operations with IoT

Satellite-enabled IoT changes how companies operate and monitor those operations. For exploration companies in challenging or novel conditions, this is a major advantage. Traditional mines required extensive ground-based infrastructure for data transmission, often proving costly and impractical in remote areas. However, with satellites in the mix, data can be collected and transmitted in real-time, regardless of location. This is important for monitoring equipment performance, worker safety, and even environmental conditions. Advanced predictive analytics can then assess this data to foresee mechanical failures or safety risks before they happen.

Beyond machinery, wearable devices for the mining workforce can track vital statistics, detect hazardous gasses, and even alert supervisors in case of accidents or health issues. Using data analytics, mining companies can evaluate long-term health trends among workers and design more effective safety protocols and implement better insurance policies. The industry is moving from a reactive to a proactive approach in safeguarding its most valuable asset—its workforce.

Green Goals and Net-Zero Targets

Companies are increasingly committed to reaching net-zero emissions targets. This involves a suite of green technologies—from cleaner extraction techniques to waste management. Hydrogen fuel cells and battery-electric vehicles are replacing diesel-powered trucks. In some cases, mining operations are even leveraging renewable energy sources like wind and solar power to operate machinery, reducing the carbon footprint.

Electric trucks and machinery are both efficient and more eco-friendly. These trucks are quieter, which is better for local communities and wildlife, and they emit zero greenhouse gasses, which is better for long term environmental outcomes. Ultimately, they offer a lower cost of ownership when compared to traditional diesel trucks, thanks to fewer moving parts that require less maintenance.

Solaris Resources and the Warintza Project

Solaris Resources and its Warintza Project in southeastern Ecuador are prime examples of this technological evolution. Recognized as one of the best greenfield copper development opportunities available globally, the project has a large 1.5 billion tonne open pit resource, mainly from the Central deposit, one of six discoveries so far. Located at low elevation and close to renewable hydroelectric grid power, it is an opportunity for major mining companies and investors looking for green copper projects critical to global energy transition and decarbonization. It’s no surprise that Solaris has received recent strategic interest from Chinese investors and why the company hired its own M&A financial advisor to help field and evaluate the offers they have received to date.

The Future is Now

In an age where data is king, advanced technologies are providing mining companies with the tools they need to operate more efficiently and sustainably than ever before. Satellite-enabled IoT and data analytics are just the beginning. As the industry continues to evolve, it’s clear that the future of mining will be shaped by those who invest in these cutting-edge technologies while keeping an eye on environmental responsibility.
