Digital proof of identity via smartphone is getting closer: in the future, German citizens will be able to carry their ID card not only as a plastic card in their wallet, but also on their smartphone. This digital ID card, the so-called EUDI wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet), is intended to make it possible to identify yourself easily and securely throughout the EU. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has now officially confirmed the plans.
Identity card becomes an all-rounder
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the advantages of the digital “wallet” to the Tagesschau: “We want citizens to be able to identify themselves quickly, securely and easily directly via their smartphone – without an additional card or reader.” The mobile ID card should not only serve as proof of identity, but also store official documents and help with everyday tasks such as applications or online banking.
The new function offers considerable relief in everyday life. In the future, it will be possible to securely store other important documents in the app in addition to your ID card. This eliminates the need to carry physical cards and documents with you at all times. The federal government's goal is to gradually expand the use of the EUDI wallet by 2027. The first functions could be activated as early as 2025.
Data protection at the forefront
Security and data protection are the focus. The data on the new ID card should be protected by high security standards and the privacy of the users should be preserved. Faeser assured that great importance is attached to protecting this sensitive information from misuse.
The development of the digital ID card is also intended to promote innovation. In addition to the government solution, private companies and foundations should also be able to develop their own versions of the EUDI wallet. This would give citizens more choices. According to a corresponding EU regulation, all EU states should provide their own wallet by 2027 at the latest.
