NRecently at dinner the subject came up for Christmas. Does that really have to be the case, the adolescent asked with a warning look, to buy a tree, decorate it and then also light it up, when saving electricity is the order of the day? And anyway, maybe the fir came from one of those plantations contaminated with pesticides, where the forest should be reforested more sustainably. In any case, this is not good for the climate, not to mention the disposal! One could, he suggested, decorate the yucca palm without lights. The main thing is green and chocolate on it.
The discussion quickly became heated, with a clear gap between young and old: We don’t need a tree because of us, the children said. What a crime, said the parents. Because of course the fir tree is part of Christmas, if only because it is such a homely reminder of one’s own childhood. When the tree was decorated on Holy Morning, time seemed to shine and all was well. Therefore: with all due respect to climate protection and energy saving, but a yucca palm at the festival is out of the question!
