Elbow pain could be debilitating as it might prevent you from using your arm. Injuries or other conditions occurring in the elbow joint can result in pain, and there could be multiple causes of that. In severe cases like fractures or dislocations, surgery might be required and Orthopedic Trauma Implants may also be used.
The decision of whether surgery is feasible or not is always taken by the doctor after performing certain tests.
Well, in this post, we are going to discuss some of the possible causes of elbow pain. Let us now see what they are.
Here are some of the elbow disorders that could result in elbow pain along with other symptoms.
Dislocation and Fracture
A fracture is when a bone breaks and dislocation is the condition characterized by the displacement of the bone from its position. Any of such situations could arise in the elbow joint and the reasons for that could be trauma like an automobile accident or contact sports injuries. These conditions result in intense and immediate pain. Severe cases of dislocation or fracture might require surgery.
Olecranon Bursitis
Bursae are the fluid-filled sacs that protect our joints. They are also present in the elbow joint and when they get damaged or inflamed, the condition is known as olecranon bursitis. It also results in pain while restricting the movement of the affected elbow. A direct blow to the elbow, infection and arthritis are some of the common causes of the condition.
Medial Epicondylitis
Medial epicondylitis is the condition that affects the inner tendons of the elbow and one of its commonest causes is the use of the elbow for a repetitive throwing motion. Also known as a golfer’s elbow, the condition is common in baseball players and golfers.
Lateral Epicondylitis
This is just the opposite of medial epicondylitis. Here, the tendons on the outside of the elbow are affected. Again, repetitive stress on the elbow joint is the commonest cause of this condition. Lateral epicondylitis is also known as tennis elbow and people who are more prone to developing this condition include:
- Cooks
- Painters
- Carpenters
- Plumbers
- Autoworkers
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is known to affect cartilages that are present in our joints. In this condition, cartilages start to wear and eventually they get damaged. This could result in instability of the joint along with pain. An injury to the elbow could result in elbow osteoarthritis and the condition could cause pain and swelling in the elbow joint.
Ligament Strains and Sprains
Overuse is the most common cause of sprains and strains in the ligaments, and this is also a painful condition. Here, it is very important to identify whether the ligaments are only stretched or torn completely/partially.
