Eva Kaili loses her position as Vice President of the European Parliament. The deputies voted with only one dissenting vote for the immediate removal of the politician from Greece, who is currently in custody.
Dhe European Parliament dismissed its Vice President Eva Kaili on Tuesday on suspicion of corruption. A large majority of MEPs in Strasbourg voted in favor of Kaili having to give up the post. The 44-year-old social democrat was arrested on Friday on suspicion of corruption by the World Cup host country Qatar and is currently in custody.
Kaili also denied allegations of accepting bribes from Qatar on Tuesday. “Kaili believes that she is innocent,” her lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos told Greek private broadcaster Open TV. “She has nothing to do with bribes from Qatar.” The lawyer “neither confirmed nor denied” reports that large amounts of cash were found in her Brussels apartment.
