Speed camera apps are very popular with many drivers: The smartphone programs warn extremely precisely at which points you should step off the gas pedal – but they are actually not legal for drivers. But there is one exception.
Being flashed is annoying and expensive for drivers. Many therefore use speed camera apps – but this is forbidden. However, there is a legal loophole.
It is legal for drivers to be warned of speed cameras on the radio. According to Stiftung Warentest, drivers of a car are not allowed to use a program on their cell phone for this purpose. A little logical, but clear legal situation, is the assessment of the testers. In the event of an infringement, drivers face a fine of 75 euros and a point in Flensburg.
Speed camera app: ban only applies to drivers
According to the testers, the law only applies to the driver of a car. The passenger should use such an app and verbally inform about speed cameras while driving. Drivers are also allowed to look for possible radar spots before starting their journey or during a break.

Even Google offers a speed camera warning function in its navigation app in some countries. If this function also comes onto the market in Germany, drivers will no longer be able to use the app while driving.
