At Gamescom, visitors get unique insights into as yet unreleased video games. With titles like “Crimson Desert” and “Dune Awakening,” a trend is also evident: deserts as game worlds are currently very popular. Fans can look forward to these gaming highlights.
At Gamescom in Cologne, visitors have the opportunity to test potential future gaming hits before they are launched on the market between August 21 and 25. With exciting titles such as “Dune Awakening”, “Crimson Desert” and “Monster Hunter Wilds”, it is clear that desert environments are very much in vogue in the current gaming landscape. These highlights await gamers in the coming months.
Role-playing action in “Crimson Desert”
For many Gamescom visitors, the role-playing game “Crimson Desert” turned out to be a highlight of the trade fair. It is an action role-playing game from the developer “Pearl Abyss”, the makers of “Black Desert”. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world. Your character must brave various dangers in order to survive. Various swords and magic spells are available for this.
In the preview reports for the game, the varied battles are particularly praised. They are described as powerful, brutal and full of effects. Role-playing game fans who like challenging games like “Elden Ring” have another game to look forward to.
Fight for survival in the desert in “Dune Awakening”
From the fantasy desert we move on to the space desert. In “Dune Awakening” players have to survive on a desert planet. The game is based on the “Dune” franchise, but does not include the plot from the books or films. Instead, it tells an alternative story in which Paul Atreides – played by Timothée Chalamet (28) in “Dune: Part Two” – was never born.
The title is a so-called “Open World Survival MMO”. This means that many players are in an open game world at the same time and try to survive as long as possible. To do this, they can join forces on the desert planet Arrakis and build their own settlements or take over the bases of other players.
The “Spice” from the books and films plays an important role, which the developers did not want to explain in more detail. The giant sandworms are also there. These can either appear randomly while exploring the desert planet or can be specifically summoned in battle with other participants. The game is scheduled to be released for PC in early 2025.
Exciting monster hunting in “Monster Hunter Wilds”
Even after 20 years, the “Monster Hunter” series is far from over. With “Monster Hunter Wilds”, the developer Capcom wants to improve the previous monster hunt even further. According to initial media reports from Gamescom, they have succeeded – albeit with some reservations. The formula on which the games are based is simple: you have to hunt big monsters in order to make big weapons from them in order to be able to hunt even bigger monsters. This motivates players to roam the most diverse areas – from the desert to the jungle. The entire “Monster Hunter” series has sold more than 100 million units.
“Monster Hunter Wilds” is designed to appeal to veterans of the series and newcomers alike. For long-standing players, the tactical depth in the battles has been increased and each of the weapon classes has been revised. For newcomers, the entry barriers have been lowered and the systems made even more accessible. But players don't go hunting for the big monsters alone. A large cat as a companion and a riding bird are also part of the game. According to “IGN”, however, the poor technical performance of the Gamescom demo spoiled the gaming experience. The title is said to have stuttered a lot when playing and even crashed in some cases. Despite this, monster hunting is said to have been a lot of fun.
Criminals in space in “Star Wars Outlaws”
“Star Wars” meets “Grand Theft Auto”. That's probably the best way to describe “Star Wars Outlaws”. Instead of fighting the Sith with a Jedi, players take on the role of the criminal Kay Vess. She takes on various syndicates and criminal organizations while planning a robbery. Instead of a lightsaber, she uses a laser pistol. The game's plot is set between episodes five and six of the “Star Wars” films.
The gameplay involves sneaking, infiltrating bases, putting together your own crew and exploring the open game world. According to preview reports, players shouldn't expect any big surprises in “Star Wars Outlaws”. Exploring the world should still be fun. The possibility of piloting your own spaceship in space and taking part in shootouts was particularly highlighted. Fans don't have to wait long for the game. The release date is August 30th.
Sequel to the cult game with “Path of Exile 2”
“Path of Exile 2” was in development for more than five years. It is finally due to be released on November 15th and fans of the genre are already excited, after all, the predecessor has achieved cult status. As with part one, in “Path of Exile 2” players have to fight through hordes of enemies from an isometric view. They can choose between weapons or spells.
The gameplay is like other titles in the action role-playing genre: you have to defeat a large number of enemies in order to receive better equipment as a reward. According to initial media reports, the developers have been able to implement this in a very satisfying and motivating way. Players can get an idea of it for themselves from November, especially because the game is set to be released for free. The action-packed adventure can be played online with a friend or on one screen in couch co-op.
