WhatsApp is developing new mechanisms to protect users from spam. For example, future messages from unknown accounts can be automatically blocked.
Millions of people communicate on the WhatsApp platform every day, for example in conversations with friends and relatives. However, the instant messaging app also attracts fraudsters who are on the lookout for the next gullible user. Cybercriminals use fake competitions to obtain user data, for example, or use a variant of the infamous “grandparent scam” to trick users into sending them money. The spread of misinformation is also a problem.
According to a post in the app's help section, creating a “safe space” for all WhatsApp users is a “top priority.” Therefore, reducing unwanted messages and spam emails is a constant focus of work. WhatsApp is therefore introducing new features to combat this problem.
Block unwanted messages automatically
According to the website “WABetaInfo”, WhatsApp is currently using automated tools to combat spam. Algorithms are designed to detect unusual user behavior and the mass sending of messages. With the additional function of actively blocking messages from an unknown account as a preventative measure, users are given another control option.
The blocking function is activated when the other person sends an unreasonable number of messages. The feature is described accordingly in a published screenshot: “To protect your account and improve the performance of your device, WhatsApp blocks messages from unknown accounts when they exceed a certain number.” This function is still in the development phase, but is to be introduced in a future update.
Not everyone has the right to write
A future username function also aims to increase privacy and security and is currently in the development phase. This will allow users to create a unique name that others can use to contact them without a phone number. App users will also be able to set up a PIN with at least four digits. Users should not base this on personal data, as it will be required when the feature is activated to contact a user for the first time using the corresponding username. Existing conversations will not be affected, however.
