A generous donor who looks like a whale… The former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson received a substantial donation in cryptocurrencies. This is not a first for “BoJo”, which has repeatedly shown its interest in this type of asset.
Boris Johnson receives a very large donation in cryptos
This gift is unusual for several reasons. Not only are crypto donations still uncommon in politics, but the amount is particularly high. This is an unprecedented amount: the 1 million British pounds (GBP) that these cryptocurrencies are worth thus completely eclipse the previous record, at 150,000 GBP.
It was businessman Christopher Harbone who donated this substantial sum to the former British Prime Minister. He is himself a shareholder of the company that oversees the Bitfinex exchange platform as well as the stablecoin issuer Tether (USDT).

The interest of “BoJo” for cryptocurrencies
The links between Christopher Carbone and British politics are not new. The man reportedly donated over £15m to the British Conservative Party. He had been particularly active for the pro-Brexit campaign.
As for Boris Johnson, he has already shown his interest in the sector. He had been compensated more than 250,000 GBP for an intervention in Singapore, hosted by blockchain company ParallelChain Lab. In addition, his brother held a consulting position with Binance until last December.
It should be noted, however, that not all countries are in favor cryptocurrency donations for political parties or their members. Last April, Ireland stood out by banning donations of crypto assets to political entities. The neighbor of the United Kingdom thus reported fearing Russian interference, against a backdrop of war in Ukraine.
