Frankfurt Terminal 2

Despite the Corona dent, Fraport is expanding. But when the new Terminal 3 is finished, an older part of the airport will first be cleared for renovation. There will be room for many more passengers after 2028 than before the pandemic.
fSoccer fields and bathtubs – the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport talks a lot about these units of measurement when it comes to the construction of the new third terminal. This is growing south of the runways – on an area the equivalent of 25 soccer fields, as the group describes 176,000 square meters. The roof of the main hall spans the area of 2.5 fields. In the shell construction phase, so much concrete was poured that it could fill 4,000 bathtubs a day. The new building is scheduled to go into operation in 2026.
And at Fraport, ideas are emerging as to which passengers should then go through the new building to the aircraft: It is the travelers who currently use Terminal 2. Fraport wants to shut this down for a while in 2026 with the opening of terminal building number three. Check-in counters, security checks, shopping areas and aisles should close. The last time there was calm was in 2020, when very few were flying due to the corona pandemic. The reason for the next break in operations is that there will be remodeling and renovation for about two years. “The budget is in the three-digit million euro range,” confirms a Fraport spokesman for the major renovation plan.
