The giant Google has invested 300 million dollars in the young startup Anthropic via its branch Google Cloud in exchange for 10% of the shares of the company. Evolving in the sector of artificial intelligence, Anthropic had been financed to the tune of more than 500 million dollars by Sam Bankman-Fried and part of his entourage last year.
Google invests heavily in artificial intelligence
Through its cloud computing subsidiary Google Cloud, the giant Google has invested around 300 million dollars to support the startup Anthropic, which operates in the artificial intelligence research sector. At the same time, Anthropic is adopting Google Cloud services as the preferred cloud provider to gain more computing power.
According to the press release, this should allow the startup to continue its research work while helping itself with “ learning systems custom developed by Google which are used in particular for Google Search and YouTube products.
Anthropic is the company behind the AI ”Claude”which is placed in direct competition with the AI ”ChatGPT” which we have been hearing about for several months. Claude was created on the basis of the “Constitutional AI”a principle put in place by Anthropic that forces the AI to structure itself according to certain principles of beneficence, hence the name constitution, in order to ensure that it remains “harmless”.
Values shared by Google, according to James Manyikafirst vice-president of GAFAM:
“At Google, we believe it is imperative to pursue AI boldly and responsibly. We are committed to developing and delivering useful and beneficial applications, to applying responsible principles grounded in human values and safety, and to evolving our approaches as we learn from research, experience , users and the wider community. Our partnership with Anthropic is part of this philosophy. »
As a result of the sum invested here, Anthropic sold 10% of its shares to Google Cloud.

Anthropic, largely funded by Sam Bankman-Fried in the past
As reported in a New York Times article published at the beginning of last December, Sam Bankman-Fried was the leader of a funding round carried out in April 2022 intended to finance the young startup, then less than a year old.
After a first substantial fundraising the year of its creation (in 2021), Anthropic was thus able to develop its activities with a colossal contribution of 580 million dollars of capital. And among this sum, no less than 500 million dollars have been invested by Sam Bankman-Fried.
Why such a sum? For reasons of “effective altruism”, a school of thought often invoked by the former CEO of FTX having taken root in the early 70s, the origin of which has been widely attributed to the Australian philosopher Peter Singer.
Indeed, the majority of Anthropic’s research focuses on security around AI, in particular via its “Constitutional AI” principle that we mentioned earlier. This is why SBF and certain members of his entourage wanted to add their stone to the building: in order to mitigate the damage caused by an artificial intelligence that is too “free”.
The contribution of capital from the FTX sphere being relatively recent, it is not impossible that a recovery of funds can be made. Moreover, according to the teams in charge of the bankruptcy of FTX, these approximately 500 million dollars could participate in a significant way in the reimbursement of creditors of FTX.
