“Why is Russia attacking Ukraine?” Google has published the search trends of the year. In addition to the war, users were interested in the farewell to the Queen and the Federal Minister of Finance’s Sylt wedding. The most popular “what question” of 2022 is curious, but explainable.

What particularly moved people in Germany in 2022? The evaluation of Google search trends provides information on this question. Shortly before the end of the year, the company again published an extensive list of search terms that had been used particularly frequently since January. For Germany, the picture is not surprising: Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has created a great need for information among users.

In the “General search terms” category, “Ukraine” is ahead of “WM 2022”, “Olympia 2022”, “Queen” and “Vladimir Putin”. In the “Headlines” category, “Ukraine” was also googled the most, followed by “monkeypox”, “9-Euro-Ticket”, “Heat warning” and “Layla” – a range from war to climate change to party hits.

The Russian President also aroused strong user interest. “Vladmir Putin” is the most-googled personality in Germany in 2022 (ahead of Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, who fought a lawsuit), and Putin is also ahead in the “Politicians” category (ahead of the resigned Minister Anne Spiegel). The Kremlin ruler is also very good when it comes to the “how questions” (“How old is Putin?” followed by “How long is the quarantine?”).
