Google publishes an update for the Chrome browser. A security gap is actively exploited. Users should carry out the update immediately.
Google has closed a security gap in the Chrome browser. According to the version announcement, it is a weak point of the JavaScript engine V8, which is already used by malignant actors. “Google is known that an exploit for CVE-2025-6554 in the wild exists” and the risk is classified by Google as “high”.
Update obligation for Chrome
Already on June 25th, the Google Threat Analysis Group discovered the weak point. The developers of Chrome then published a configuration change and finally an update for all supported platforms, reports “Heise Online”. The current version fixes the error and should be installed immediately.
The versions were adjusted for various operating systems: Chrome 138.7204.96 for Linux, 138.0.7204.92/.93 for Mac, 138.0.7204.96/.97 for Windows and others. Users can check and update their browser using the version dialog. Other browsers such as Microsoft Edge based on Chromium will also provide updates promptly.

Fourth Zero-Day weakness in Chrome from Google
A Zero-Day weak point describes a safety error in software, which is unknown to developers and therefore does not provide countermeasures. Attackers take advantage of these vulnerabilities before a patch or a solution is available.
As “Security Affairs” reports, the four Zero-Day weak points that Google removed in its Chrome browser in 2025 are:
- CVE-2025-6554 : This weak point affects the V8 JavaScript and webass ensembly engine and enables attackers to carry out harmful code.
- CVE-2025-5419: This weak point allows attackers to obtain unauthorized access to system resources via manipulated web content.
- CVE-2025-4664: According to “Chip”, this weak point is a security gap in the browser loading module, which attackers can take advantage of to steal data.
- CVE-2025-2783: This weak point enables attackers to obtain unauthorized access by incorrect memory management in the browser.
These vulnerabilities were all discovered and remedied in 2025 to ensure the safety of Chrome users.
How does the update work?
To update your Google Chrome browser, follow these steps as described on “Chip”:
