You can use WhatsApp status to upload images, links, videos or sayings or see what your contacts are up to. The color of the profile ring gives you important information.
WhatsApp status: color is crucial
- If one of your contacts has uploaded a new status, a green circle will appear around his or her profile picture.
- As soon as you tap the profile picture with the green circle, the status opens. The green circle then becomes a gray circle. Gray means something like status.
- If a contact has posted several photos in the status, the circle is divided by gaps – each line represents a status posting. Based on the color, gray or green, you can see exactly whether you have already viewed all of your contacts' status messages today or whether new ones have been added.
- The status disappears automatically after 24 hours, but you can also save it using a screenshot.

Gray circle in front of news: This is what it means
You may also see a small gray circle in the WhatsApp chat overview. This has a different meaning than the gray profile ring.
The not completely closed circle with the three curved lines can be found directly before a message and means that you have interacted with a status of your contacts. This means you viewed the status and responded to it with an emoji or commented with a message.
However, the gray circle only appears in the chat overview, not in the open chat. If your next message to the contact is a “normal” one in the chat and not a status reaction, the gray circle will disappear on its own.
