The right settings
Once you have installed the add-on, you will find the orange button on the top right of the extensions bar. You can click on this to carry out a desired action. However, you should first go to the extension’s settings, otherwise only the Mozilla start page will open.
In the “Hide and Replace” function, you can specify a target address that suits better – for example, Wikipedia. All other windows disappear. Alternatively, you also have the following options:
-
Minimize all browser windows:
If you have sound on, it will continue to be heard. -
Minimize current browser window:
If you work in another browser window, then the compromising window will remain open. -
Close all browser windows:
Your browser disappears completely and only other programs are visible. In order not to stare at an empty desktop, you should have other tools open in the background.
Under “Customize” you also have the option of displaying a less conspicuous icon in the browser. Finally, the orange button is relatively easy to see. The same applies to the caption, which should be as neutral as possible, for example “minimize window”.
The quickest way to use the panic button is to use the keyboard. So set a key combination that is as simple as possible to trigger the function. By default it is F8.
Caution is advised
The panic button or “boss key” for your browser is useful, but you should use such add-ons with caution. If you are caught watching videos and streams during working hours, this can have legal consequences ranging from warnings to termination. So it is at your own discretion to use this type of application.
