The number of ATMs in Germany is constantly decreasing. So it's no wonder that when you need one, you'll have to search in vain for an ATM nearby. Various apps can help.

According to current estimates by the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken (via FAZ), there are almost 51,800 ATMs nationwide. The decline can be attributed to various factors, including the increasing trend towards cashless payments and the possibility of withdrawing cash in supermarkets and drugstores. But various explosions of the machines may also have contributed to the fact that ATMs are becoming increasingly rare nearby.
If you have already searched unsuccessfully and would like to get a better overview, you should consider the following apps. They list where you can get cash quickly. Most people already have two of them on their mobile phones.
#1 Google Maps and Apple Maps
Navigation programs such as those from Google and its competitor Apple are no longer just used for route planning. They can also be used to easily find nearby ATMs and restaurants, for example. All you need is the app's search function.
Instructions for Google Maps:
- Start Google Maps app.
- Enter “ATM” in the search bar and press the search button.
Google Maps now displays a map with the locations of nearby ATMs. In addition, a list shows detailed information about each ATM and its bank, such as address and distance. If you tap on a specific ATM, you will receive further information such as opening hours, photos and user reviews. To get to the selected location, tap the “Directions” button, select the desired mode of transport and follow the instructions as usual.
Instructions for Apple Maps:
- Start Apple Maps on your iPhone.
- Tap the search bar and type “ATM.” Then press “Search.”
Apple Maps now also shows a map with the nearest locations as well as the most important information about them. Navigation there is similar to that described above.
#2 CashPool app
The CashPool app lists the ATMs of all the affiliated partner banks. Customers there can withdraw cash for free across Germany using their Girocard. One downside: the app has received rather negative reviews in both the Play Store and the App Store. Users give it just 2.9 and 1.7 out of five possible stars respectively.

#3 Online search of individual banks
Many banks offer their customers a search function for nearby ATMs in their own apps. If this is not easy to find or does not work, you can still use the normal online search, which you can also use on your mobile phone via your browser.
Directions:
- Savings Bank : You can use the search function to find branches and ATMs nearby.
- People's Bank : The branch search allows you to quickly find self-service locations with machines.
- ING-DiBa : The ATM search will help you find what you are looking for.
- Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, HypoVereinsbank, Postbank : With the CashGroup search function you can find corresponding ATMs nearby.
