On Thursday, on-chain security specialists PeckShield published a review of the year 2024 in terms of hacks and scams in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Although the number of occurrences has been decreasing over the last 2 years, we note that the amounts involved are up by around 15% compared to 2023, with $3.01 billion worth of cryptocurrencies lost last year :

Of last year's total losses, PeckShield estimates that $448.5 million was recovered, the equivalent of less than 15%.
In terms of distribution, hacks represent 71% of the amounts at stake with major losses such as the 305 million dollars which led to the closure of the DMM Bitcoin exchange.
Still regarding hacks, we can also note that 53.5% of the amounts concern decentralized finance (DeFi) while the rest of these attacks targeted centralized environments. In terms of blockchain, Ethereum (ETH) is the most affected at 34.8% incidence for 47.3% of losses, followed by BNB Chain with 32.1% incidence for losses estimated as more negligible.
If the amounts lost appear to be on the rise this year, note also that the total crypto capitalization also increased by 96.8% between January 1 and December 31, 2024, thereby mechanically increasing the expectation of loot for the players. malicious.
