When Hubert “Hubby” Scherhag is finally wearing his bathrobe again, he’s happy. When he’s already completely sweaty and just sits alone at his white baby grand piano, which a carpenter friend of his made for him for the concerts. When his mostly older fans freak out, as if the real Udo Jürgens had risen again with him. Because Scherhag, 59, from the small Eifel village of Mertloch near Koblenz, comes unusually close: facial expressions, appearance, especially the voice, an amazing resemblance, many say.
Of course, Scherhag always has a glass of tea on the grand piano during his performances, like his great role model. When he sings, he emphasizes the “t” at the end of the word like a stage actor and pushes his lower jaw out like Jürgens did. Scherhag copied that from many hours of arduous work in front of the television. He doesn’t just want to be the umpteenth hobby musician who sings “Greek wine” at village festivals and for a few euros at weddings when it comes to swaying, and hardly hits the right notes. He wants Udo Jurgens be and get as close to it as possible, as a total work of art.
