As of March 28, ConsenSys, the company that notably develops the MetaMask wallet, will open its zkEVM testnet to the public. The use of this layer 2 may be an opportunity for investors to potentially become eligible for airdrops, from the various applications building on it.
ConsenSys’ zkEVM testnet will be open to the public
Last December, ConsenSys has launched the testnet of its zkEVMa layer 2 network using ZK Rollups technology and aiming to improve the performance of the main blockchain on which it is deployed: Ethereum (ETH).
Until then, this layer 2 was permitted, this means that only a few actors were authorized to carry out work on it. But that’s about to change, as ConsenSys just announced that the testnet of its zkEVM will be open to the public from March 28 :
From creating developer tools to open-source software, @ConsenSys has worked to democratize #Ethereum since the genesis block. 🌐
Now, we are taking an important next step by providing permissionless access to our EVM-equivalent zkEVM rollup.🧵

All of this happens on top of the Goerli testnet, and it’s the last straight line before a deployment on Ethereum.
On the investor side, this will therefore be the opportunity to carry out actions on the various applications making up the network, to hope, perhaps, to become eligible for airdrops of different tokens when this zkEVM goes to mainnet.

A layer 2 programmed in Solidity language
The specificity of a blockchain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is that it greatly facilitates the deployment of decentralized applications (dAppps) already present on such networks. And for good reason, these dApps being written in Solidity, they don’t need to completely rewrite new code in another language, thus facilitating the work of integration. Note also that it is ETH that is used to pay gas costs.
Regarding zero-knowledge evidence, or Zero Knowledge Proofa central element in the technology of ZK Rollups allowing to certify the validity of transactions, ConsenSys is based on open source zkSNARK technology.
Several applications are already building on this layer 2, such as the decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap or the Hop Protocol bridge. In addition, the famous MetaMask wallet, developed by ConsenSys, is of course compatible with the network.
To date, the ConsenSys zkEVM testnet identifies more than 66,700 addresses for more than 530,000 transactions :

While Ethereum is a technology that is bound to be constantly evolving, and which is still in its infancy, ZK Rollups benefit from an increasingly pronounced interest to support network scaling. For their part, the ConsenSys teams are optimistic for the future:
“We are in the early chapters of Ethereum’s history and are proud to have some of the brightest minds in Web3 as partners with us on this journey. […] As we open our unpermissioned testnet, we hope you will join us in helping to scale Ethereum. »
