The descent from the heights of international politics to the level of domestic coalition disputes is steep for Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. It doesn't help that the news portal Politico has just named her the “most powerful person in Europe” of 2025. The political capital that Meloni has accumulated on the world stage in 2024 – as acting chair of the G-7 group of western industrialized countries, in the EU and bilaterally – has limited use as a currency in the fight to maintain and consolidate power at home.
