Bulgaria’s former opposition has fulfilled an election promise: Prosecutor General Gesev, who is considered corrupt, has been dismissed. Still, the reformers are dissatisfied. They fear that one problem has been replaced by another.
NJust a few days after taking office, the new coalition government in Bulgaria was able to fulfill one of its most important promises: Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, who was widely regarded as corrupt, is no longer in office. The former opposition has accused Geshev, who took office in 2019 under former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, of being a link between the government and the country’s criminal oligarchy.
The Attorney General had abused his extensive powers and the inviolability of his office to thwart or delay investigations into corruption cases at the highest level for years.
