Everything you need to know about the new iPhone 16
The next iPhones will have a new button that is more commonly seen on cameras: a shutter button for the camera. The new control element is intended to make it easier to take photos and videos – and at the same time offer users a faster way to learn more about their surroundings with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
The button at
The camera button is also a shortcut to AI functions. For example, you can use it to take a photo of a concert poster or an animal to find out more about it.
Overall, the iPhone 16 largely retains the design of its most recent predecessor models. But the two cameras on the standard model are again arranged in a line one above the other, as they were on the iPhone X. With the camera system, the phones can now also record three-dimensional videos for Apple's Vision Pro computer glasses.
Inside there are new chips and more RAM. This is a prerequisite for the new functions with artificial intelligence to run smoothly on the devices. Of the earlier models, only the iPhone 15 Pro is powerful enough for “Apple Intelligence”. The starting price of the standard model of the iPhone 16 remains unchanged at 949 euros.
New languages for “Apple Intelligence” – no German
These AI functions are intended to summarize missed emails and text messages, create individual emoji symbols, and fish out information on demand, among other things. Many of the AI functions will initially not be available to users in the EU. Apple points to legal uncertainty caused by the Digital Rights Act (DMA), which sets out rules for large platforms. Above all, they are concerned that the DMA requirements for opening up to other manufacturers and service providers could compromise the protection of user data.
So far, “Apple Intelligence” only works in English. At the event, Apple announced four additional languages for next year: French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
8.30 p.m.: The most important Apple innovations were presented. That was it from the keynote. Thank you for your interest!
8.25 p.m.: Now the camera functions are explained in more detail. This is what the new iPhone 16 Pro can do:
8.20pm: “iPhone 16 Pro Max has the best battery yet,” Apple advertises. But they haven’t even mentioned how long the phone’s battery lasts.
8.15 p.m.: How expensive are the new smartphones? The iPhone 16 starts at $799, the Plus model at $899.
8.10 p.m.: The iPhone 16 comes with a significantly larger battery, which should increase the running time.
20:07: In addition, work has been done on improving the cooling of the iPhone. Apple also mentions improved hardware that will enable games like Assassin's Creed Mirage to be played on the smartphone.
20:02: The main camera of the new iPhone 16 has 48 megapixels, while the telephoto lens offers 12 megapixels.
19:58: With the new camera button, you can also have things explained to you by taking a photo of a restaurant or a concert ticket, for example. The iPhone 16 should be able to provide information about the object being photographed.
19:55: Apple's AI will also help organize data collections such as email inboxes. The company promises that Siri will become significantly smarter.
19:49: An important innovation of the iPhones are the new camera buttons, which also allow zoom.
19:46: This is what the new iPhone 16 looks like.
19.45: The new iPhone will be available in five different colors.
19:42: The wait is finally over! The new iPhone is being introduced. This year there are four variants again. The standard iPhone 16 model and the more expensive and better equipped iPhone 16 Pro, each in two display sizes. The design is almost the same, based on that of the current generation. Pro models, however, have slightly larger screens than before. Apple has also come up with another button as a camera shutter release. The new iPhones also have more RAM so that new AI-based functions can run on them. However, some of these will not be available in the EU at first.
19:39: Apple has introduced the latest apps and features for the AirPods Pro. CEO Cook takes the floor again. Is the iPhone finally coming?
19:36: Once again everything important about
To ensure that the watch can be worn for longer, 30 minutes of charging should fill the battery to 80 percent. So far, many users have charged the watch overnight. The new Apple Watch will also be able to detect water temperature and depth. The starting price remains at 449 euros.
7.30 p.m.: Now Tim Cook is introducing the new
19:22: The company is presenting its new functions in great detail. A special health sensor in the Apple Watch is supposed to be able to detect whether you suffer from sleep apnea. With the help of a new app, it will also be possible to measure water depth for divers and the water temperature.
19:09: First of all, there is the Apple Watch, which has a slightly larger display and is also noticeably thinner. Sending messages should be even easier and faster.
19:05: The Apple event begins. The new iPhone models will be presented soon. CEO Tim Cook opens the show.
Today Apple introduces the new iPhone – it is supposed to lead the company into a new era
Apple is facing the
The new iPhone models are expected to be presented from 7 p.m. CEST on Monday. In addition, the company traditionally refreshes its Apple Watch computer watch at its September events. And new models of the Airpods earphones are expected.
Larger displays for iPhone Pro
According to information from the financial service Bloomberg, the new iPhone will again be available in four variants this year: The standard iPhone 16 model and the more expensive and better equipped iPhone 16 Pro will each have two display sizes.
The design is said to be largely based on that of the current generation. A common upgrade is better cameras and more powerful chips. However, according to Bloomberg, the Pro models will have slightly larger screens than before.
New camera button as hardware innovation
Apple is also said to have come up with another button to act as a camera shutter release. It will work in a similar way to a camera: light pressure activates the autofocus, and pressing it all the way down will take a picture. At the same time, the button will also allow you to control the zoom with swiping movements.
The phones will also get more RAM so that they can run new functions based on artificial intelligence. Of the current models, only the iPhone 15 Pro from last year is powerful enough for this. Now all new iPhones should be ready for “Apple Intelligence”.
Thanks to AI, the iPhone and other Apple devices are designed to make users' lives easier: summarizing missed emails and text messages, creating individual emoji symbols, fishing out information on demand – all of this should be possible in the future.
No “Apple Intelligence” for the EU for now
However, some of the new functions will not initially be available in the EU. The company points to legal uncertainties caused by the digital law DMA, which sets out rules for large platforms.
Apple said it was particularly concerned that the DMA guidelines for opening up to other manufacturers and service providers could compromise the protection of user data. But according to media reports, the “Apple Intelligence” functions will also be gradually introduced for US users over several software updates.
New housing for Apple Watch
According to the Bloomberg report, the Apple Watch will have a slightly larger display and will also be noticeably thinner. The company introduced the computer watch ten years ago and brought it onto the market in spring 2015.
Since then, the Apple Watch has led the market and is the basis for the company's fitness business. The larger Apple Watch Ultra, in its third version, is said to feature improvements primarily on the inside.
Apple-Event avoids other appointments
It is rather unusual for Apple to present new iPhones on a Monday – but the company is avoiding two other events. On Tuesday, the first TV debate between presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is likely to attract the greatest attention in the domestic market.
And in Europe, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has announced its decision on the state aid dispute between Apple and the EU Commission, which wants the company to pay more than 13 billion dollars in back taxes in Ireland. The ECJ could send the case back to the General Court of the European Union (GCC) in Luxembourg, where Apple had prevailed.
In addition, rival Huawei plans to present its own innovations just a few hours after the iPhone event. The main product expected is a smartphone with a display that can be folded out on two sides. Huawei was once number two in the global mobile phone market – until US sanctions pushed the Chinese company into international insignificance. In China, meanwhile, Huawei is still strong.
