All incumbent governors have been confirmed in the Russian regional elections. The Kremlin party United Russia was also successful in most regional and city parliaments.
VAgainst the background of the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s candidates have won mostly clear victories in the regional elections in Russia. According to the central election commission, all 14 incumbent governors who stood to vote won, as the state news agency Tass announced on Monday. The Kremlin party “United Russia” also has a majority in most regional and city parliaments. Voting took place from Friday to Sunday in more than 80 Russian regions. The independent election observers from the Golos organization listed numerous signs of fraud while the election was still going on.
The head of the Russian republic of Buryatia in Siberia, Alexey Zydenov, achieved the highest result among the governors. He officially got 86.23 percent of the votes. The most modest result from the Kremlin’s point of view was delivered by Alexander Brechalov with an official 64.38 percent in the Udmurtia republic on the Volga.
The elections are overshadowed by the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and massive allegations of manipulation. Even before the elections, members of the opposition complained that candidates who spoke out against the war were not admitted. According to the Russian authorities, however, no serious violations of the electoral code were registered.
