Surfing the Internet dominates Germans' leisure activities, according to the “Leisure Monitor 2024”. Study authors note an increase in weekend trips and social engagement.
Germans prefer to spend their free time on the Internet. According to the “Leisure Monitor 2024” of the Foundation for Future Issues, 97 out of 100 respondents use the Internet regularly. There is also an increase in weekend trips and visits to restaurants and flea markets. The Foundation for Future Issues also observes an increase in volunteer work. The study also shows that traditional leisure activities, such as visiting bars or shopping centers, are declining.
Study leader: People want more social contacts
Professor Ulrich Reinhardt, scientific director of the study, explained: “The Internet is omnipresent – whether on the couch, in bed or on the go – and is with us at all times.” The study also shows that many people want more interpersonal contact. Many people are looking for more closeness and time together to laugh together, experience something or talk in peace.”
Second and third place in the list of most popular leisure activities are television and listening to music. The radio is a little behind in seventh place. It is also noticeable that the first 16 places are taken by activities that take place indoors. Only 52 out of 100 respondents regularly spend time outdoors.
