If strict UN sanctions are reintroduced, Iran's government sees withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a possible reaction. Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Rawantschi raised this at a meeting with representatives from Germany, France and Great Britain on Friday in Geneva, the Isna news agency reported. She cited the spokesman for the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Ebrahim Resai.
The meeting was about exchanging views with the Europeans, emphasized Resai. “We did not negotiate in Geneva because there was no text that we could actually have negotiated,” Irna quoted him as saying. “Our goal was to first set the framework for the discussions. We are still a long way from actual negotiations.”
In the past, the West and Israel have repeatedly accused the Islamic Republic of seeking nuclear weapons. The Vienna nuclear pact was intended to restrict the nuclear program and in return relax sanctions, but was unilaterally terminated by then US President Donald Trump in 2018. Since then, the Islamic Republic has no longer strictly adhered to the requirements.
