Tech giant Google has introduced its latest series of smartphones: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. A look at the models.
During the Made by Google 2024 event, the Californians presented their latest range of smartphones consisting of four models: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. During the presentation, it was emphasized that it was “the biggest update [sei]that has ever been available for the Pixel family.”
A look at Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL
For the first time, the Pro model of the new Pixels can be purchased in two different sizes. The smaller version is equipped with a 6.3-inch display, while the XL version comes with a 6.8-inch display. Apart from the size of the screen – which affects the resolution and dimensions – and the battery (4,700 mAh/5,060 mAh), there are no other differences on a technical level. The Pixel 9 Pro simply functions as a more compact version of the XL model. So-called Super Actua displays are installed here, with the Pixel 9 having a 6.3-inch Actua full-screen display and a 4,700 mAh battery.
All three models promise a maximum battery life of up to 100 hours when using an “extreme power saving mode”. The Pro variants have 16 gigabytes of RAM, while the cheaper Pixel 9 still has 12 gigabytes. All also have a new Google Tensor G4 processor, the fastest and most efficient processor in Google's smartphones to date, which is designed to improve the use of everyday applications – be it surfing the web, taking photos or streaming video content.
When it comes to the cameras used, Google has used a dual rear camera system with a 50 MP wide-angle camera and a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera on the Pixel 9. The Pro and Pro XL each have a 48 MP camera with a telephoto lens.
The series has an elegant design with rounded corners, polished metal sides and a matte glass back. The Pixel 9 is available in Peony, Wintergreen, Porcelain and Obsidian. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL variations are Rose Quartz, Hazel, Porcelain and Obsidian.
Many of the smartphones' functions are based on AI support and the hardware is designed to ensure that the device is prepared for a future with new breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence. The company guarantees updates for the operating system, features and security for the next seven years.
The foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold
The most striking of the newly introduced models is certainly the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The device has an external Actua full-screen display and a so-called Super Actua Flex full-screen display with 204 millimeters (8 inches) on the inside – the largest ever installed in a Google smartphone. This new Fold can be fully opened and the display is, according to the company, 80 percent brighter than that of the Pixel Fold.
The Tensor G4 processor and 16 gigabytes of RAM are also installed here, while the battery has a capacity of 4,650 mAh, which should be enough for up to 72 hours in the aforementioned energy saving mode. As with the other Pro models, a triple rear camera system is used, but this consists of a 48 MP wide-angle camera, 10.5 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and 10.8 MP camera with a telephoto lens. The smartphone is available in the colors Porcelain and Obsidian.
The prices
The Pixel 9 is the cheapest of the devices presented and starts at 899 euros, depending on the storage configuration, while the Pixel 9 Pro is available from at least 1,099 euros. The Pixel 9 Pro XL costs another 100 euros more at 1,199 euros. There is also a significant jump to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which can only be purchased from 1,899 euros. All models can be pre-ordered now. More information about the smartphones is available on Google's in-house blog.
