Message from the ifo Institute: German retailers continue to struggle with severe bottlenecks
According to the ifo Institute, there are still food delivery bottlenecks in the German retail sector. One of the main reasons is price disputes with manufacturers.
According to the Ifo Institute, food retailers are still severely affected by delivery bottlenecks. In February, 86 percent of the companies surveyed reported gaps in the shelves, in January it was even 96 percent.
One cause is difficult negotiations between manufacturers and retailers about prices and conditions, said Ifo trade expert Patrick Höppner on Tuesday in Munich: “Food manufacturers can use delivery stops as a means of pressure in these negotiations, while retailers, for their part, make use of the opportunity to temporarily discontinue products from certain manufacturers from the range.”
In view of the high prices, customers are looking for cheaper alternatives
The high prices had a strong influence on the purchasing behavior of consumers. Many “buy more price-sensitively and are more willing to visit several shops and split up purchases when looking for good deals,” said Höppner. The sites would therefore be better visited.
In retail, 53.5 percent of the companies surveyed are still affected by bottlenecks. The situation at the bicycle dealers has eased: in June 2022 everyone reported gaps on the shelves, now only a quarter of the dealers are affected. “For many sports and outdoor products, the strong demand caused by the pandemic until 2022 will decrease again, so that delivery problems will also ease off again,” said Höppner.
