WhastApp competitor Signal is facing a big problem in Belgium. The messenger could soon be banned there. In theory, this ban could also extend to the entire EU.
In Belgium, messengers like Signal could soon be banned. A new legislative proposal is responsible for this, as “tarnkappe.info” reports. It is a version of data retention.
In certain situations, all data of the population should therefore be allowed to be collected. These include terrorist attacks if the perpetrator is still at large.
Signal could also have problems across Europe
So far, companies in Belgium have only been obliged to store data that they need themselves. According to the new law, however, they would be obliged to keep all collected data in stock. However, Signal does not want that. So far, the messenger only saves the date of account creation and the time of the last network connection.
It is not yet clear what impact the Belgian proposal will have on the other EU members. In the past, the state has often been a role model for other countries.
