Meta is currently working on a decentralized social network project. Although little information is available, this would be a turning point for the company, a large part of whose business model is based precisely on the data of these users.
Does Meta plan to create a decentralized social network?
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is said to be working on a decentralized social network. In any case, this is what a company spokesperson reported to the Moneycontrol website:
“We are exploring an autonomous decentralized social network for sharing textual content. We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can regularly share news about their interests. »
At the current stage, it is difficult to say anything about this project, but this one would be codenamed P92, and would be a decentralized fork of Instagram. Users will also be able to use their identifiers from the latter to connect to this social network.

Built on a decentralized protocol
The P92 project would use ActivityPub’s decentralized protocol to build the base of this social network. This standard is also used by Mastodon, another decentralized social network positioning itself as a competitor to Twitter.
In addition, it will be necessary to wait to have more concrete details on the characteristics of this project. Would only the data storage be decentralized, or would this give rise to a much more complete ecosystem, such as Lens Protocol for example?
Either way, it would be a notable change in trajectory for a company like Meta whose user data precisely occupy a place of choice in its business model. After the failure of the Diem project and the difficulties in starting the Horizon World metaverse, it will be interesting to follow the possible progress of P92.
