In the thread written by MetaMask intended to reveal these improvements, we learn that these new features will be offered to all new users of the wallet:
“When creating a new wallet, users can click ‘Set advanced privacy settings’ to change their RPC providers and enable features that query third-party services that help with phishing detection. and identification of incoming transactions, among others. »
MetaMask users will also be able to modify the parameters of their choice from the “ Security and Privacy from the browser extension. This includes changing RPC providers as well as the ability to enable or disable certain options such as phishing detection.
RPCs, for Remote Procedure Call or “remote procedure call” in French, are essential communication protocols for blockchain and all decentralized applications. To learn more about this, read our explanation of what an RPC is.
Moreover, it will now be indicated next to each available option if the latter will need to have access to certain confidential information to function correctlyincluding your IP address.

How to change these settings?
To access these new customization options, start by going to the ” Settings from MetaMask.
Then, go to the ” Security and Privacy “. Here you will have the possibility to modify the different features offered by MetaMask according to your preferences. As shown in the capture below on the part ” View incoming transactions ‘, you can see that this option collects your IP address.
Also note that in order to maximize your privacy, you can add some networks yourself or replace some pre-established ones with a particular RPC. MetaMask’s core networks, including Ethereum and Polygon (MATIC), are set to work with the RPC Infura.
Today, many RPC providers exist, which makes it possible to find alternatives to the RPCs present natively. For example, if you want to add layer 2 Optimism (OP) to MetaMask, you can do it using RPC Ankr as below.
These new features have generally been quite well received by the community., which had been particularly hostile to the recovery of the IP address of its users last November. Certainly, privacy is now a top priority for users regarding their choice of wallet.
