A metaverse that failed to seduce. The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department proposed a gala this week to present its new virtual universe. But the latter attracted almost no one, and critics pointed to the exorbitant cost of this communication operation.
EU’s deserted metaverse fails to convince
The European Union (EU) metaverse, dubbed Global Gateway, unveiled this virtual space on October 13. The short video had raised some questions – even some mockery – from commentators:

Still, the European Commission intended to invite interested parties to a gala, in order to promote this new space. The aim was to attract young people not politically engaged aged 18 to 35, especially those who frequent TikTok and Instagram, to spark their interest in the European Union. But the flop was total for the EU metaverse, which only managed to attract 5 people:
I’m here at the “gala” concert in the EU foreign aid dept’s €387k metaverse (designed to attract non politically engaged 18-35 year olds — see story below). After initial bemused chats with the roughly five other humans who showed up, I am alone. https://t.co/ChIHeXasQP pic.twitter.com/kZWIVlKmhL

$387,000 in expenses
The problem is that the European Commission’s humanitarian aid department paid no less than $387,000 to develop this metaverse platform.
The blunder is not entirely unexpected, however: Vince Chadwick, the Devex journalist who went to this gala, had already received internal reactions to the project last November. On condition of anonymity, employees of the department had been particularly critical with the projectbelieving that he was rather “ashamed“.
Beyond the fun, the story is symptomatic of one thing: the difficulties that metaverse projects have. to attract users. We remember that the Meta machine is also struggling to seduce with its Horizon Worlds – to the point of arousing the mistrust of shareholders. The question therefore arises: is it because these projects are badly put together, or is the metaverse, which we are being sold as the new frontier of the Web, less revolutionary than we think?
